UNKNOWN gunmen attacked a police station at Adogo, the headquarters of Ajaokuta Local Government, Sunday night, the Kogi State Police Command has confirmed.
In a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations officer, ASP Elvis Aguebor, he confirmed the extent of the attack..
Aguebor said that the attackers came into Adogo to attack the station from different directions of Okene, Ajaokuta and other routes.
He said that they were apparently desirous of carting away arms in the operation, adding that “the desire of the hoodlums to cart away arms was aborted’’.
Aguebor said that the arms had been evacuated and moved to safety, adding that no human casualty was recorded on the part of the police.
He said that the heavy dynamite launched by the attackers, demolished and set fire on part of the station.
The spokesman, however, said that the four suspects in the cell as at the time of the attack were unhurt.
The police spokesman said he believed that some of the attackers escaped with bullet wounds since the police men on duty took positions and returned fire for fire.
He said that the police had started combing the bush and the surrounding communities with a view to tracking down the attackers.
Aguebor said investigation was underway to ascertain the identity of the attackers.
He urged members of the public to assist with useful information and report anybody with gunshot wounds to the police.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) learnt that the gunmen, numbering about 50, emerged from a bush close to the police station at about 11p.m and opened fire on the station.
NAN learnt that the policemen on duty, however, engaged them in a gun duel that lasted almost one hour.
