A scholar from the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales, INALCO, (the French Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilisations), Paris, France, Dr. George Alao, was recently at the University of Ilorin to explore the possibilities of opening up discussions on how the two institutions can collaborate in the areas of student and staff exchange and research.
Dr. Alao, an Associate Professor, who was in Ilorin between September 2nd and 5th, 2014, disclosed that part of the reasons for his visit was to help in the development of a Memorandum of Understanding between the University and his Institute in order to chart some sorts of academic collaboration and exchange.
He disclosed that INALCO, which was established in 1795, is Europe’s leading University in the area of the teaching and learning of 96 non-Western civilisations and languages, as well as French as a foreign language.
Dr. Alao noted that the Institute could be a worthy partner in the various domains of teaching, research, manpower development and resource building, adding that the Institute’s Africa Department in particular is looking forward to a close collaboration with the University of Ilorin in the areas of student and staff exchange and research.
While welcoming the visiting scholar, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, highlighted the benefits of collaboration with international institutions.
Prof. Ambali, who disclosed that the University has MoUs with many other universities across the world, noted that students of the University are presently in the Republic of Benin and Togo on French Immersion programmes.
The high point of the occasion was the presentation of the Unilorin MoU template by officials of the Centre for International Education (CIE) to the visiting scholar for consideration by INALCO, Paris.
Joining the Vice-Chancellor to receive the French scholar were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. (Mrs.) N. Y. S. Ijaiya; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Yisa Fakunle; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research Technology and Innovation), Prof. Gabriel Olatunji; the Registrar, Mr. E. D. Obafemi; the Dean, Faculty of Arts, Prof. Ayo Akinwale; the Director, Centre for Linguistic Immersion, Dr (Mrs.) Elisabeth De Campos, as well as the Vice-Chancellor, Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, Prof. AbdulRasheed Na’Allah.
