The All Progressives Congress Youth Forum (APYF) has asked members of the National Working Committee and the its members in the National Assembly to publicly apologize to all party members for causing Nigerians for the crisis it created within the party while appointing the leadership and principal officers of the National Assembly.
Furthermore, the group asked the party leadership to effectively implement sanctionary laws “whenever the need arises for deterrence on both the leadership and membership side”.
Speaking in a statement signed by its chairman and made available to NAIJ, Ismaeel Ahmed said the emergence of a PDP Senator, Ike Ekweremadu as the Deputy Senate President is a “costly mistake which must be condemned and must be rectified going forward”.
In the light of the crisis generated by the National Assembly crisis, the group has urged the President, Muhammadu Buhari, the leadership of the party, elders of the party, the Progressive Governors Forum and other relevant stakeholders to; “Immediately convene a meeting of the relevant stakeholders, namely: the warring factions; the leadership of the party; the various caucuses, and party elders, to resolve the leadership impasse;
“Insist that all principal officers (not presiding officers) nominated should honorably resign and allow the party to reach a widely consultative consensus on the issue; Everyone must be ready to shift grounds and make the necessary compromises to find a solution. The party cannot be seen to be dictating and the members cannot once again defy the authority of the party. Amicable resolution is therefore tenable”.
The group also asked the President appoint a National Assembly Liaison Officer to bolster the confidence of the legislators and communicate with the President through his proxy.
“Rectify this unwelcome precedent by ensuring that the APC Constitution, bylaws, and any other relevant governing documents be amended to incorporate the selection process for National Assembly presiding and principal officers. Furthermore, these amendments must be clear, democratic, and devoid of any ambiguity”.
Meanwhile President Muhammadu Buhari, his vice, Yemi Osinbajo, all APC governors, the National Assembly leadership and a cross section of Senators and members of the House of Reps are expected to be present.
